First Local EMR Users Group Held

Houston,TX – 13 April 2011

The Weston Group organized the first Houston Local EMR Users Group on April 13, 2011.  The purpose of the group is for Practice Administrators and senior Information Technology professionals to be able to share information and tips about information-related information for physicians and physicians groups.  Attendees felt the information learned was valuable and timely considering the increasing complexity of healthcare IT with Meaningful Use and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems.

The focus for this meeting was on how to create an organizational plan to qualify for Meaningful Use incentives for calendar year 2011. Brad Larkin, of The Weston Group, gave a presentation on Meaningful Use topics including organizational planning, physician registration, self assessment, and attestation.

Additionally, some participants noted that the Houston medical community, despite being world famous for excellence, is under-served by national groups and organizations with out-of-town representatives.  Thus the need for a local group and information sharing was agreed upon.

Another tenant agreed upon at this meeting was to focus the group on information technology issues but avoid patient recruitment and retention issues relating to competition within the medical market place.

The potential formation of Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) was also discussed at the meeting with more information on the topic to be addressed at a future meeting.

Wes Spears, CEO of The Weston Group, related “we are fortunate to be part of this change in Healthcare in the United States and are happy to be able to sponsor an event of this type where so much can be learned.”

The Weston Group is a Healthcare Engineering company focused on Information Technology..
